Bobby Kotick Is The Anti-Christ Of Gaming

He just can't stop. I literally think he has to be the dumbest sonofabitch toever run a company and got them to number one by making one smart acquisition in Blizzard. I can't even comment on this anymore because I will get so fired and use words that may cost me future credibility. Here's the write-up from Gamespot in its entirety. I have to go to bed this is just so blatantly retartded it shut my brain down, I don't know how they sat through it.

During a 45-minute presentation today at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco, Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick covered a substantial amount of ground. For one, the executive explained how he expects Activision games--specifically Guitar Hero--to bypass consoles altogether. The executive also showed off animation technology he hailed as the future of storytelling in games, pegged the next generation of consoles as being two years out or more, and explained openly why he wants a company culture infused with skepticism, pessimism, and fear.

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick.
On the Guitar Hero topic, Kotick told analysts and investors about some potentially big changes in store for the rhythm franchise. When asked about a Guitar Hero game that didn't need a console to operate, Kotick bluntly appraised its benefits.

"I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model," Kotick said.

The executive also told attendees to "expect many of our products to be playable independent of a console," specifically saying he'd been impressed with media hub functionalities shown by 1080p TVs that let users stream content from their PCs. He also suggested a day in not-too-distant future where players' Facebook profiles will be integrated into Guitar Hero, letting them make songs to share with friends, post high scores or favorite songs on their profile page, and so on.

While games like Guitar Hero have proven popular for the tactile experience of their peripherals, Kotick said Activision is also working to push the envelop in emotional game experiences. He showed the audience a clip of Call of Duty: World at War, saying his friends in the movie industry all react by pointing out how unreal the mouth movement looks. The executive said game makers just haven't reached a point yet where the mouth movement and facial animation of game characters is good enough to establish a compelling emotional attachment from the player.

To remedy that, Kotick noted a realtime rendering and mouth movement technology Activision has been working on. He showed a clip of the technology, saying it could could represent nothing less than a transformation of the medium. While Kotick said the technology wouldn't surface until the next generation of games, he did say it would be ready before the next generation of hardware.

Kotick added that publishers don't take advantage of the full capabilities of today's hardware, and said it might be some time before the next generation arrives. Typically, console makers give publishing partners about two years' notice when it plans to introduce new hardware, Kotick said. But so far, the console makers haven't given him specs or white papers on new hardware, nor have they consulted him on design decisions, leading him to believe their current priority is instead to reduce the cost of each system.

When he wasn't promoting the company's games or technology, Kotick was celebrating its laser-like focus on the bottom line. He pointed to changes he implemented in the past as being particularly beneficial, such as designing the employee incentive program so it, "really rewards profit and nothing else."

"You have studio heads who five years ago didn't know the difference between a balance sheet and a bed sheet who are now arguing allocations in our CFO's office pretty regularly," Kotick said.

He later added, "We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

If that sounds like it would create a corporate culture that isn't all sunshine and hugs, then it's "mission accomplished" for Kotick. The executive said that he has tried to instill into the company culture "skepticism, pessimism, and fear" of the global economic downturn, adding, "We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression."

Uncharted 2 Breaking Review Systems!

It appears that Uncharted 2 is making waves already with an early review from French website Noelshack giving the game a 21/20, yes that is higher than their scoring system goes. I don't do scores for my reviews but if I were to score Uncharted when I do my review it would likely give it a score higher than a 100 point scale could give, or an A++ if it were a letter system. C'mon October 13th, I need my Uncharted fix.

Bad Week

I have been sick for the last week or so, and so was my wife for part of it. I got the worst of it since I smoke but I feel better and should resume normal posting tomorrow, both here and at BLPGaming.com.

Check out the new Sony ad, good stuff.

Speculation Almost Never Wrong

The Xbox 360 Elite is now, well tomorrow it will be, $299 after it's price drop. The Pro is also getting a cut to $250 putting it in direct competition with the Wii. Nintendo better cut the price soon or they will start to lose substantial market share to the others if they do not, and that would almost be a shame.

Don't Forget...

BLPGaming.com check it out!

Feels Strange

I need an Xbox 360, I feel so out of touch reporting on Xbox news and I don't play one myself. I am completely limiting myself, hopefully not for much longer though. And the Wii, well I won't get another one of those until it's sub-$200 or less. Uh, money shouldn't be so hard to come by....

Where I'm Writing

Quick note, I am now writing for BLPGaming.com, there's a great layout there and I want everyone to check it out there and here. I will start posting more of my thoughts on the days news here, and the actual news there. So look here in the evening and there throughout the day.

Mass Effect Will Be PS3, Eventually

An interview with Computerandvideogames.com(CVG) and Bioware's Ray Muzyka has left speculation wide open that Mass Effect could be coming to the PS3 after all. The interview, which goes up later today, has a section all to itself on CVG's website where the Bioware CEO defintiely does not rule out the possibility of Mass Effect coming to the PS3, nor does he rule out that it is not already in development.

When quizzed on why the developer chose not to bring the series to PS3, Muzyka said: "I think a more accurate way to frame it is to say we've announced we're developing Mass Effect for 360 and PC. Right from the beginning we said we wanted to deliver Mass Effect on the 360. Right now all we've announced is we're working on 360 and PC."

This is very exciting news for people who are single console owners looking to get into a critically acclaimed title that is exclusive to the 360. I am looking at getting an Elite when the price drops and I have the extra cash and this is one of the games I will definitely be picking up. Both ME and ME2 have been on my radar since they were announce, and is one of those games that pains you to have only one console. With the changes that are being made to ME2 looking incredible and adding even more depth to the series, it's one of those games you just have to play, like Bioshock.

I know a lot of people pegged Mass Effect as a series making the eventual jump over to the PS3, and Ray Muzyka has definitely talked about how much they like working on the PS3 with Dragon Age: Origins, it seems like a no brainer. The rest of the interview will be up later today, hopefully there will be more exciting news to come out of it. Stay tuned and feel free to comment.

Big New For Me

So if you check the comments here you would have noticed a job offer last week. I was shocked to see it and extremely excited at the same time. I will in fact be taking up this position and will plit my time between this and that trying to offer different content but will almost always link back to the content on the website as it will take more of my time. The website is great and it will be evolving into an even more spectacular site in the near future which makes it even more exciting to be a part of something, which in all honesty is just about what everyone these days wants isn't it!? So I will put up the URL of the site as soon as I have some content up over there and by all means I want everyone to become a part of the new site. The light posting days of last week were partially attributed to this change for me and it just being a downright busy week. Keep a look out because we are looking to change the way you get your entertainment fix!

Castlvania Lords of Shadow GC09 Trailer!

If you have already seen the new Castlevania game in action then this won't entirely surprise you. What will though is the stellar vocal talent they drummed up for the game. Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle, and Jason Isaacs are the only ones mentioned in the trailer but that is enough, at least for me. You can tell this is a western take on a great franchise with Kojima behind the proverbial wheel. Just watch I have kept you too long already.

Demo Madness on Euro PSN Update!

Those of you who have European accounts, whether in Europe or America should head on over to the Playstation Store for demo's. In no particular order there is a Wet, DiRT 2, Mini Ninja's, and IL-2. That's a lot of demo play! Plus there is a smattering of new trailer content from Gamescom, that is if you haven't seen them online already. Why are you still here, go play!?

Mass Effect 2, GamsCom 2009

There were only small new snippets of info released at EA's preeser since Bioware was discussing two other games along with it. But the info will suit fan's of the series and work to entice new players into the fold.

First and foremost they stressed that your party needs to be carefully thought out, and the way you treat the members of your team as it affects not only the game as it plays but it will affect you in the end as well. It literally means life or death for Sheppard. If he is dead by game end then he is dead, and I presume that to mean he won't be a playable character in the next game.

They showed the Omega Mining Satation which looked very, very nice in presentation. Surrounded by asteroids and meteor rock, it looked dark and formidable in the dust, with it in front of the sun hiding light and creating shadows. They are obviously taking every single detail into account and want players to be even more immersed in the world this time around. That immersion was present in the two other games shown, Bioware is aces at what they do for sure.

The last thing was a new character called a Grunt, pretty simple. They stressed his strength and aptitude for violence and unpredictability. He is a fierce looking character, as you will see from the screens I have below.

All said Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to be a better ride through SciFi gaming than the first and should be eagerly snatched up by veteran and new players alike. Check the screens and feel free to comment!

Final Fantasy XIV Footage From the Floor

Here's some Final Fantasy XIV footage from Gametrailer TV or GTTV, it's all in game footage and it looks great, and even better in HD. It show Lalafell, range combat and animations, in that order going down. Enjoy!

I Apologize

I have not posted any substantial news in a day and I apologize to everyone, and I will get everything up periodically throughout the day. There's a lot from EA and Capcom which will make up the brunt of the day and any other significant news. So let's get started with the next post!

Someone Using Square Enix to Scam???

It appears that someone, or someone(s) are sending out checks saying they are from Square Enix. It is worth noting this is a scam so if you or someone you know gets one of these do not cash it. The body of the alert from SE is below.

We are aware that certain unknown parties located in Canada have been mailing counterfeit checks with Square Enix’s name to targets located in the United States. These checks are not valid and should not be cashed.

Square Enix is NOT affiliated with USA MEGA MILLIONS, THE BIG GAME, ROYAL TRUST FINANCIAL, FIRST COMMERCIAL TRUST, or MARKET RESEARCH, INC. Fable 3 Teaser

I tried to upload this video myself from the press kit I got from Microsoft but it took forever and almost destroyed the formatting of the write-up the precedes this post. Here's the teaser and it really short because it is, well, a teaser. Enjoy!

Thanks Joystiq
Microsoft’s press conference was far less spectacular than I expected it to be, I at least expected them to try to one-up Sony in the price department and they didn’t. The only thing that they did talk about was Fable 3 which is interesting indeed and definitely sounds like a game that I will be picking up on release next year. So instead of telling you about what they have planned for Europe, it will be about Fable.

First off Fable 2 is going pay to play on September 29 this year and will be released in five chapters, the first of which is going to be free. At the end of the chapter you will be prompted to purchase the next or the whole game. That’s very interesting for people who like to play games in little bites. Also the game will be completely compatible with Knotthole Island and See the Future which is also a good thing.

Now onto Fable 3 and I want to start off by saying that I think it is very strange that Fable 3 is coming out two years after the third. RPG’s don’t typically have that kind of turnaround in a console generation and seems that Peter is definitely trying to capitalize on the 360’s hardware while it still seems fresh. A new gameplay element was also teased which is most definitely Natal, despite the fact that he doesn’t come right out and say it. I certainly hope this game isn’t going to be sold short so Microsoft can say they have an RPG ready for Natal. It would just be a shame to have a rushed game for something like that.

Anyway, the game will take you into the role of one of many heroes, one that will eventually be the King of Albion. The entire game is based around what kind of ruler you are, and it will show in your world if you are greedy, ruthless, a progressive, a tyrant, cherished, popular, etc. This is why Lionhead has been teasing the public with pictures of leaders like Abe Lincoln or Che Guevara. They are making the game so that you will feel like a ruler when you play. Family will also play a role, children and wives will be a key focus for you and if history proves anything women and children can play kingdoms like puppet masters.

The game starts you as the son or daughter or the hero from Fable 2 and uses your game save from said game to make the character you play as. The first part of the game has you leading a revolution against a tyrant king. You will get support, followers, unite the countrymen, etc. They said they were inspired by Joan of Arc and Genghis Kahn. You are forced to make choices and promises in the game to your followers, and whether or not you can keep them will play a role in the game as well. You will also age quicker since taking on something like this usually takes its toll on the ruler. At some point you will make it out of Albion and into the rest of the world where you will meet up with characters that were in Fable 2.

Lionhead have been studying historical events to help inspire a major dramatic feel to the game, which Peter let on has been a tricky thing for them to do. This lead them to a new game mechanic called ‘Judgments’, where you will feel the power at any time and decide the fate and outcome of a situation. The example they use is someone storms into the throne room and a girl who is suspected of stealing food is brought before you at any time during the reading you can stop to investigate further or you can pass immediate judgment. You can visit her family, her accuser, etc. and these are the quests of Fable 3.

The next mechanic is ‘Touch’, here’s where Natal will be used and it sounds pretty interesting. You will be able to shake hands, hug, and later on kiss. This will help develop your intimate relationships in the game for sure. I don’t think that there will be anything more intimate than kissing in the game so don’t get any idea’s people. So you can take a walk and hold hands with your kid or wife. Rush into a house and save a child that is crying because it’s in danger and that’s what makes up ‘Dynamic Touch’. They want you to know how your people react to the touch of their ruler, will they be enthralled by your presence or will they shy away in disgust.

I think it sounds like a very interesting game and the one thing that I could actually get into Natal with. The stuff showed at E3 was ho-hum, but this sounds very promising indeed. It bothers me that Sony has had this capability for awhile with the PSEye and never used it or implemented it though it is very likely they will with Microsoft pushing these kinds of boundaries. That was the whole of the presser right there. Kind of weak but still interesting, but what do you guys think!?

Can't Comment, Try This

If you find that you can't leave a comment try going into your internet tools and enabling third party cookies. Apparently this has been a problem for some people who have tried to comment and cannot. I can comment fine on my end but there is no sense talking to myself. Hope that helps.

Heavy Rain Trailer

Here's a Heavy Rain Trailer to go with the info posted up earlier.

via Joystiq

Here's the Slim, It's Sexy!

Here's a pic of the PS3 Slim from Joystiq!

The Price Drop

The price drop did in fact effect the 160GB, it is now $399 so go get one!

PSP Getting Some New Things

The PSP and PSPGo! are getting some fantastic new additions this fall. Some are Europe only, most are global. I will talk about both because different people read here so I want them to get their info as well.

The biggest announcement for me was the digital reader coming to the PSP, and it will read books and comics. In addition it will be coming with comics at launch, including the entire Marvel catalog(down the line) and will be launching in the UK and in North America this November. Marvel also thinks that this could be one of the most significant for Marvel, and it will be. I used to be a rabid comic reader and got out of it for awhile and have been wanting to jump back in, not only with new releases but back issues that used to be in my collection. Old comics can be a a pain to track down and with the entire Marvel catalog(and DC I'm sure) I will be massively consuming comics. My wife loves e-reading books now so this will be a big thing for sure, I may have to get her, her own PSP!

There will be new mini games coming to the PSP that are not allowed to exceed 1mb in size, so they have definitely thrown the gauntlet at Apple. It will be a direct competitor to the app store for sure. Though apps weren't specifically mentioned you would be hard pressed to say they won't make an appearance on the store. A new LocoRoco game and Eye of Judgment for the PSP is playable on the floor. Don't know how they are doing EoJ on the PSP, but I don't care because I hated the one on PS3. Fifteen games will be available at launch of the PSPGo!, and 50 will be ready by year end this year. Alien Havoc, Puzzle Scrape, Sparta, Tetris(yay!) were shown so hopefully I can get some video's later.

There will be three new colors for the PSP, Turquoise Green, Pink Blossom, and Lilac Purple. I think these are going to be global and it definitely shows they are trying to capture the tween girl demographic for PSP consumption. Some will be available in bundles, all will be available by themselves.

The last big thing is great for European PSP owners and a great incentive to buy since Gran Turismo has the largest user base in EU. If you purchase and register your PSP product between the 1st and 10th of October, you will get a voucher for Gran Turismo PSP! The whole game for free, that's a great deal that should move loads of PSP's and PSPGo's this fall.

[UPDATE] Pink and Green are Euro only.

Heavy Rain Notes, Brief PS Wand Info

David Cage took the stage at Sony's Gamescom presser to briefly talk up one of the most amazing games that will ever come out and that game is Heavy Rain. He posed one question to the crowd at the presser and that was, "How far are you willing to go for love?" A question that we have no doubt asked ourselves at some point in our lives, I know I have.

The game will contain four characters that will weave their own stories and attempt to answer that very question. Two characters had been kept secret until now and they were revealed at the show. The first is Curt Shelby, a private investigator looking into the Origami Killer. The second is Ethan Mars an architect that has lost his son and has four days to find the kid and redemption. It appears they will be working the bond between a man and his son to pull the emotional strings in his story. Finally, every single scene in the entire game is completely interactive which should help with the immersive factor this game is supposed to have, and sounds like it will achieve.

The new motion controller being developed by Sony was not shown in a live demo at the presser but they did show a video and dropped some notes on it. If they put the video up, I will embed it here later so check back. Anyway, the 'wand' will not just have you waving your hands and arms around. The controller will be anything you want it to be a torch, sword, shield, etc. It responds to the player through light and sound, and is precise down to sub-pixel levels. Sounds pretty impressive on paper, but since I am not a fan of motion control I will reserve my judgment until TGS next month. We will see how well it does against the Wiimote when it hits next Spring....

Thanks Kotaku for the live blog!

Short Conference, Epic Re-Launch of PS3

All I can say is wow, I couldn't watch the conference live, no one could unless you were there but I took my notes(thanks Kotaku's live blog) and have some info drops and a video from the store. First the major things.

The PS3 gets a new price effective tomorrow for $299, as far as I know that is the 80GB model. There was no mention of what they are doing with the 160, I would venture a guess and say it will be $399, and there's a possibility that it could be $299 to clear out stock if they are only going to sell the new PS3 Slim's 120GB model only. That is purely SPECULATION on my part, not a fact. If it does shake out that way then they will sell the remaining stock out extremely fast. I imagine the PS3 is already selling gangbusters through online retailers. I will definitely be picking up a slim next month, sorry fat, we have fond memories but I want a skinnier model. Jack Tretton explains below with pics!

The next firmware update to 3.00 is freaking incredible! They say it's not going to launch for another couple of weeks, but once Sony announces a firmware update it is usually up pretty quick, so hopefully it makes it here sooner. I will let the video explain the rest below, followed by the list from the PSBlog.

“What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.

Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.

Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.

Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.

Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

That's all for this post, I am trying to make them in shorter easier to handle bites. Up next is Heavy Rain, then the PSP. I want comments!

Thanks Kotaku, Playstation Blog

What A Presser!

EA's presser was hot! They are on a roll and I have some great highlights of the presser, I take fantastic notes and I have press releases to fill in any gaps. I will put the whole thing up later after I get all the screens and vids that were shown, Sony's conference starts in less than 40 minutes now and it's three hours long so I wouldn't expect anything up until I have compiled all my info and gotten all the media(or what I can get), so write ups will be up tonight. Sorry it takes longer when you are one person doing the work that the bigger places have teams dedicated too. Keep it here though, anything big that comes out of the Sony presser I will have up immediately, until feel free to comment.

At This Point It Must Be True

You would have to be living under a rock to not know that Sony is planning on dropping the prie of the PS3 at it's Gamescom conference, it begins in three hours(my time), and everyone has dropped the price of their stock of PS3 to clear space for a cheaper, sexier, PS3 console.

Well Kmart seems to have officially spilled the beans, and can you blame them for wanting to drum up traffic to their stores in advance of the announcement? It's Kmart, almost nobody shops there anymore, so let them have this win. Not only do they call out the rumors directly, they stop just short of showing the actual new
PS3. I am pumped for the conference, I will cull what news I can from live blogs since I can't find a live stream of the video, but you can count on a price cut for sure(it was almost a fo sho).

Anyway, if Sony doesn't drop the price of the PS3 today I think the interent and Bobby Kotick's head will explode. The cries of fanboys everywhere would be heard around the world. Don't drop the ball Sony, you need a win.

Some Notes on the Day

Just a couple of quick mentions about the news of the day. First I am sorry that I didn't post a lot of news today I had too many other things going on, the big one being my Red Faction playthrough for the review, I totally underestimated the amount of time I would be spending with it for the review. I am a completionist, so running through quickly is not an option.

The Chromehounds servers will be shut down on the 6th of January, so to all you players out there, sorry for ya because it's a great game.

Shadow Complex came out today be sure to get if you are a Castlevania or Metroid fan as the reviews going around point at it being unabashedly similar, I will get a review of it up sometime down the line so don't look here for it yet(unfortunately).

Gamescom coverage starts early tomorrow, so check here I should have as much of it covered as I can without actually being there, maybe in a couple of years I can get out there to cover it live.

Thanks to everyone who's been reading, it's not a lot yet but it's getting there and I appreciate all of my readers! If the commenting isn't working I am sorry, it works on my end so I don't know what else to say except reload, switch browsers, or make sure you have clicked through to comment(someone may need to know that) Otherwise have a nice evening.

Ready For A New Cycle By 2012?

Will you be ready for a new console cycle by the time 2012 rolls around!? I don't know if I will be or not, seeing as I haven't been this content with a console generation since the SNES was the console of choice. Whether you are or not Crytek's president Cevat Yerli seems to think that's about the time the new ones will be heading to stores. Similar to GDC Europe last year he outlined Crytek's evolution from Far Cry and the first Cry Engine to Crysis, CryEngine 2, and CryEngine 3.

Until then, he believes Crytek will be ready to power games with its CryEngine 3, which is claimed to be "next-gen ready," and which will likely stay very relevant until Crytek releases another engine specifically designed for that next generation of hardware. Until the graphical renaissance Yerli sees occurring around 2013, games will have to rely on art style and use of physics to distinguish themselves in the coming years instead of sheer graphical muscle.

I can't even begin to imagine what the hell graphics are going to look like when the next generation roll around. Once Alan Wake and Heavy Rain release in their respective platforms, we will be getting pretty close to the uncanny valley, graphics will be so lifelike they will be hard to distinguish from reality. If the CryEngine 3 will be powering games later this gen and early next it must have some serious power behind it. That statement in itself is silly considering just how good Crysis looks and it's powered by the first CryEngine. So can we imagine what the 3rd iteration of that engine will be capable of? I don't think anyone can, and I certainly don't think anyone will be ready for the next generation of platforms until at least 2012, and that's fine with me.

If the uncanny valley is reached with the next console generation than it is likely that console generation will in fact be the last. Some would have you believe this one is but I don't think the world is ready to be console-less just yet, we still have at least five years of traditional gaming left before we should start the transition from console to no console or distributed gaming. Though some of use are ready fro that, the rest of the world is not since saturation of HD and High Speed internet isn't where it needs to be, especially since America is further behind than most in terms of adoption and acceptance of more powerful mediums. I just hope when we do get there we can put all of the retarded console war bickering behind us, it's getting really old

Xbox 360 Arcade Price Increase!?

In Britain that is. The Xbox 360 Arcade is actually getting a price increase in Britain from 130 to 160 pounds(sorry I don't have their dollar sign). The Elite is mentioned but the price isn't, the Premium(Pro) isn't mentioned given more evidence that it is in fact being phased out completely. Accessories are getting a small bump up as well by one or two pounds, and Microsoft has attributed all of this to the poor pound to Euro exchange rate. Kind of a strange move considering Gamescom starts tomorrow in Germany, but money has to be made so I guess their hands are tied in this matter. Feel free to comment below.

New Command and Conquer 4 screens

EA released a bunch of new screenshots for the final Command and Conquer game yesterday and you can check them out below. For now they only have the game as coming to the PC, but that could change down the line. The game sold okay on consoles but it likely sold better on PC and keeping it there keeps the quality higher, and from the looks of these screens the game is moving along nicely.

Bionic Commando Review

Bionic Commandowas released back in May of this year, and it did not fare well, neither in sales nor was it a critical darling. While some of the smaller websites gave it a decent shake, the bigger sites were not so kind. Whether or not this says anything about me, the bigger sites were wrong and the smaller sites are in fact correct. Since I am a smaller site, really just a blog, I guess that means I am automatically going to give it a good score. If that is what you thought, then you are right(ish), since I am not giving an actual score to the game. Read on to see what I loved, hated and thought was just fair to middling.

What I Loved:

The Gameplay: The gameplay of Bionic Commandois superb, it was super tight and well-polished, so I was surprised when I found it so easy to swing through the game with ease. Targeting is a breeze and your claw can grab onto anything. There were so many times that I thought I was falling to my death only to have my claw snap onto something at the last minute, a saving grace. Shooting was no different, nor picking things up and there are a multitude of things that you can do in the game to take out your enemies. Want to throw one at another, you can, want to punch a car at a mech or soldier, you can. It was things like these that made the game fun as hell to play and kept the variety going to the end.

The Graphics: The imagery and scenery in the game is phenomenal, it’s not the best in some areas, but overall the game looks great. Ascension City had an incredible level of detail, as did Ascension City Park, those two areas stood out to me as the best and most well developed areas of the game.

Swinging: Technically this falls under gameplay but I wanted to give it a better definition here. It can be a pain to swing in both the original Bionic Commando, and in Rearmed, and it’s one of the things that made the game easy to pick up and play. One button controls your arm mechanic, L2 on the PS3, and you can attach it to anything, unless it’s an area you cannot explore. If your target is greyed out, usually a jump will take into range to connect. You can zip to an object/enemy which makes traveling faster on ground, or you can swing. It feels great in 3D, it was meant for 3D and it’s obvious that Grin wanted to make that experience as smooth as possible. It can be sort of a bear at the beginning but it takes five minutes to get used to. It is very hard to explain how natural it feels, but it does and made this game great. Also, swinging is probably easier on the Xbox360 since it has actual concave triggers.

Music: The music in this game was top notch, the early levels had a score that reminded me of Dead Wood and if you have seen that show you know that its musical scores were awesome. The later areas were just as good but the early ones stuck with me more. If you have a surround sound system then it would be wise to immerse yourself in it, it adds volumes to the experience.

The Mobile Boss Fight: You may think it’s silly to call out a specific boss fight in a game, but if you play a lot of games then you surely have your own list of ones you love. The boss fight is pretty epic and the most fun of the entire game. It also has the most memorable line to start a boss fight that just made me chuckle “Is that a long health bar or are you just happy to see me”, out of context it sounds retarded but when you get there you will see.

What Was So-So:

No Hacking: There are relay stations peppered throughout the game that serve the same purpose they did in Rearmed, deactivate alarms and a look into what the other side is doing. Hacking takes place automatically and I wish they would have put in a mini game of sorts, for me it would have added another layer of depth to the game.

Later Levels: Some of the later areas in the game were difficult to navigate and the objects in the draw distance were very generic looking. It was disappointing in a way to get to that point and not have those objects fleshed out more. Sometimes the combat was just a touch unbalanced and I experienced frequent deaths, some frustrating, some not. You always have the tool to get through an area with ease, so if you die one way it will be a lot easier to just use a move.

Challenges/Collectibles: The challenges are the main force behind upgrades for the weapons you get in the game. Some are easy, some are tricky, and some are just seemingly impossible. Collectibles are the same way, but another aspect to them is some are just very hard to see or find at all.

Final Boss: The last boss fight was weak, period. It’s only redeeming quality in my eyes was that it was reminiscent of God of War. I won’t say more for fear of spoilers.

What Pissed Me Off:

Explanations Please: There were some baffling things in the game that I think they would assume people should just know outright. The best example of this I can use is swimming, since your arm is obviously heavy, you cannot swim, there is water early in the game and you will drown because you won’t know what to do. There aren’t a lot of instances that leave you hanging, but there are some that make you want to punch a baby.

Repeating Stuff: Get that hard to reach collectible or complete that difficult challenge? Then you died? When you die in Bionic Commandoand you have filled certain requirements, like collectibles or challenges, it doesn’t checkpoint it or save. That means if you die and haven’t reached the waypoint you have to do it again. This wouldn’t be a big deal if you didn’t die often, but you will and it definitely is one of the things that set the game back a notch in most people’s eyes. Technically you don’t have to complete it since once you complete a challenge you get your trophy/achievement, but if you like your upgrades then you have to do it again.

The End: The end of the game is weak, but it’s so weak that you feel cheated after playing all that time, dying and restarting, that it will irk you. The story unfolds nicely throughout the entire game and just ends, sorry that should be considered cheating. The game is great until the end, and that’s a shame because I would have loved to see a sequel.

There was a lot to love in Bionic Commando, and not too much to hate. The things to hate are pretty minor when looking at the big picture because it is a very good game, and fun as hell. The sad thing is the game got raked over the coals in early reviews and sales suffered a great deal because of it. This is the primary reason that user reviews are a better indication of whether you will like a game or not, sometimes there can be a 40 point or more difference in the average of either publication reviews vs. user ones. The multiplayer isn’t anything to write home about but I play games to be entertained by their story not multi. I would definitely check the game out to at least rent it and form your own opinion as learning curves vary between people. The game is a permanent own for me though, so make of that what you will.

PS3 version was played for this review and completed on Normal difficulty setting. 58% of collectible s and challenges were obtained/completed, as well as 58% of the trophies. Game is on sale at all major retailers for $59.99 or less.

Don't Forget...

To all the football fans out there, today is your early Christmas as Madden NFL 10 is out in the wild ready to be bought. I don't play these games myself but I hear there have been some decent changes to this years version and there is already a load of DLC on the PSN/XBLM, so get to playing some ball.

Gabe Newell Again

I don't know why people lend so much credence to the way Gabe Newell feels about the PS3, and they always act like he has this great burden with it. Most news outlets are running it as he still hates the PS3. Sorry, got ahead of what the big deal is.

Last night on GTTV, Geoff Keighley asked Gabe Newell if they had made any progress working with the PS3, and of course Gabe said that they have not. Here's the full qoute of what was said so there isn't any confusion.

Geoff Keighley asked Newell: "Are you guys working on PlayStation 3 here now, trying to understand it, trying to get better at it?"

To which he replied: "Uh,no. not in any real way."

That just says they aren't really working on the PS3, then of course you can never really no what the context of that statement means. They could be working with it and just aren't letting anyone in on it. I wouldn't hold my breath for that to be true but it's always a possibility. Valve can't shut the PS3 out forever, but if they do so be it, you can play the games on the 360 if you are that pressed for Left 4 Dead. The only thing that bothers me about their attitude towards the PS3 is letting that awful Half-Life 2 Orange Box to get released, it was buggier than a June Bug in June, and it isn't supported by Valve in any way. One day they may get around to doing dev work on the PS3, he can't afford to ignore it forever, especially since it's gained significant market share since HL2 was released.

In the meantime, I would ignore how some of these sites word what they write, to say one thing doesn't always mean it is that way.

EA's Gamesom Showing Is Big

THe other day I out up what Capcom is bringing to Gamescom next week, well here a look at what EA has coming, and it's a bigger list than Capcoms. It looks like they will be showing for multiple platforms over the course of the convention, some for media eyes only.

Whew that's a lot! Obviously EA would have a lot to show since they have so many studios actively working under their umbrella. There's a lot there to get excited over, my picks are Dead Space Extraction, Dante's Inferno, Mass Effect 2 and The Saboteur. My wife is looking forward to The Saboteur and she doesn't play games that often, so to me it's a good sign that something's been done right there.

There's also going to be a live demo of Star Wars The Old Republic, so I am sure a lot of gamers will have their attention turned to that, even if they don't really play MMO's. Feel free to comment on what games your looking forward to out of these lists.

July NPD, It's As Bleak As You Thought

It was a rough month for each of the console manufacturers in July, there is no disputing it, so don't bother trying. Though I don't know why anyone would want to seeing as how this is a clear signal that prices are about to fall hard, and it should be for every device on the market be it handheld or console.

Everyone sustained a loss again this month, ranging from 20%-44%, the heaviest month over month losses were the Wii and DS. Nintendo is out of it's mind if they think bundles are the only thing that will keep them going. They still fared the best out of all, but that's not worth much these days. The results are below with previous month of June in blue.
